Consequences of Troop Withdrawal - Op/Ed
By Congressman John Carter
House Republican Conference Secretary

House Republican Leaders just last week unveiled a responsible plan to help measure the effectiveness of the President's new strategy in Iraq.  The strategy sets strategic benchmarks and calling for a bipartisan select panel to oversee its implementation.  The proposal is designed to help the President's new strategy succeed.  We must persevere with such an approach to garner a positive result rather than just abandon the hard-fought efforts of our troops.

I am proud to represent Fort Hood and will always look out for the best interests of our soldiers.  Strengthening our military will assist in our efforts to achieve success in Iraq.  We need to support our troops and give them the resources they need to protect America.  Having visited Iraq three times, I know the Commanders on the ground.  Whether they say they need more artillery, more tanks, or more boots on the ground in order to attain a successful outcome, then that is what we should provide them.  If we give up on our troops, we give the terrorists the momentum they need to bring the fight to our soil.

We cannot allow this to happen.  A world where children must pass through metal detectors on their way to school and where restrictions to enter a mall are like those to board an airplane is not acceptable.  By following any course of action recommended by the Majority party would result in fighting this effort not overseas, but in our own backyard.

A plan for bringing security to the people of Baghdad is critical to any winning strategy for success in Iraq.  The mission in Iraq still has incredible value for our country.  Once the fledging Iraq government proves it can protect itself from internal and external threats, American troops will begin to return home and we can be rest assured that this effort proved triumphant.
